Mental Health Awareness

Let's Discuss Mental Health...

A sensitive topic that we do not address as much as we should and under no circumstances should it be swept under the rug.

Approximately 1 in 4 people will suffer with some sort of mental illness at one point throughout their lives, this includes; anxiety and depression.
The severity will differ depending on the individual.

Mental illnesses are brain based conditions which affect our emotions, thoughts and behaviours. Some illnesses include, Bipolar, OCD, PTSD, Schizophrenia, Depression, Anxiety & Panic Disorder as well as Eating Disorders.

Signs / Symptoms:
Extreme highs & lows, feelings of anger, social withdrawal, substance use, suicidal thoughts, long lasting sadness or Irritability

I believe that everyone you meet is fighting a battle that you know nothing about so be kind, always. Never judge or make assumptions as things aren't always as they seem on the surface.

With the Coronavirus pandemic accelerating and having no choice other than to stay indoors & self isolate, a mental health crisis is inevitable and the number of sufferers are expected to rise drastically.

Make time to regularly check in on your loved ones, friends and colleagues. We may not be able to be there in the physical but there really is no excuse not to be in touch. Send that text or make that call and be that listening ear because you just never know.

Here are a few practical ways to look after your mental health:
• Confide in your nearest and dearest. Do not fear opening up
• Keep active. Move! Exercise, go for a walk or a jog
• Eat well. Fuel your body with nutritious foods and stay healthy
• Drink sensibly. Avoid drinking excessive amounts of alcohol
• Ask for help. Acknowledge that their is a problem and speak to a health care professional or someone you can trust
• Do the things that you enjoy most. What are you good at? What boosts your self esteem?
• Take that break. It's ok to hit the pause button and take a deep breath
• Accept who you are. Understand that you are unique and there is no one else like you, in this world

And... Finally for those that need to hear this, it is ok not to be ok.
Do not be afraid to speak out - Mental health services are available, if needed.

**Seeking help is not a weakness, it is an act of braveness**
